September to November Meandering along the meadows
In springtime we offer drift-boating excursions down the famed meadow streams - the Macquarie, South Esk and Meander. This is a magically quiet experience with nothing to assail your senses except the occasional murmur of an eddy or lowing of a cow; the soft slice and heave of oars through the waters; and the delicate scent of pasture and nectar. These meandering rivers are reminiscent of English countryside, reflecting a colonial charm which grows ever more intense as the raft glides effortlessly from one grassy bank to the next. You will wonder that a trouting experience could be at once relaxing and exhilarating.
Earlier in the season, when the air is cool and the water high, you might be lucky enough to find fish foraging about in the shallow flood margins but if not you will notice that fish rise well to the dry fly. On perfect days, when the air is still and warm, there are spectacular rises to red spinner mayflies. Frogs
The highland lakes are another delight. Picture a dozen or so bold brown trout searching slowly and methodically in extremely shallow water, displaying dorsals, tails and sometimes a great deal of their backs. Imagine them suddenly sprinting, creating huge bow waves for several metres as they swoop upon unsuspecting prey. In springtime, when frog feeders are really on the go, they are probably as reliable and easy to see as any trout is ever likely to be. Marsh fish are especially alert to splashes and wakes and are usually very keen to strike. They will move a long distance to hammer the fly so more often than not accurate casting isn't essential.
Classic tailers
When lake levels subside, trout will still tail while feeding upon snails, water slaters and scud (amphipods). Such fish move about relatively slowly and are not as aggressive as frog feeders. They often seem to be quite preoccupied, searching with their heads down amongst the weeds and/or rocks, and are usually relatively difficult to catch. Nonetheless they provide excitement in the extreme and are not to be missed.
Other highland highlights
Depending upon the weather, a number of other opportunities will present themselves in the highland lakes. These include polaroiding, English loch-style fishing and much more.
