Maui Jim Polaroid

Over the years polaroiding glasses have come and gone with regularity. Some were lost, some broken, some lent, many scratched beyond usefulness and others just plain out dated. Yes, I like to keep up with the Jones' too!

Over the past 8 seasons of our guiding business I have alternated between the Spotters and Stalker brand. I've had several different styles and moved between glass and Polycarbonate. Both brands are terrific and over time I have favoured the rose tint for most of my polaroiding situations. I would not hesitate recommending either brand.

However, part way through the season I guided a client with a pair of Maui Jim, Titanium Sport glasses. After borrowing them for half a day the guy asked me what I thought of them. I had to think twice as I had completely forgotten that I had them on. My answer to him was that "I just had to have a pair".

I asked a few questions and finally found the Australian agent. A few fly shops now stock Maui Jims so I immediately bought a pair.

After wearing them for the remainder of the season I believe they are the best polaroids I have ever used. It turns out that in other fly fishing arenas other guides hold the Maui jims on a pedestal way above other brands. Christmas Island bonefish guides are one example of this.

These glasses are unique in that they weigh just 11 grams (my previous pair weighed 42 grams.) They are so light and they fit so well that you will truly forget you have them on.

They do not need straps to hold them around your neck. The arms are spring loaded and placed under your chin they grip onto your neck - no more dropping lunch into them and again, you will forget they are there.

The anti glare inside coating is a terrific idea that works well and is not common on other brands.

The lenses are coated with some sort of hydroscopic compound that water runs off - a little like using 'RainX' on your car windscreen. Again, I think an advance over other brands and it seems to make them easier to clean. On that subject get yourself a Scientific Angler lens cleaning cloth next time you are in a fly shop - they are unbelievably good!

I was worried about scratching but my client says that he has not scratched a 4 year old pair that he lost the case for long ago. He simply throws them in his fishing bag with everything else. It seems that the scratch resistance is very high and my pair certainly are not scratched yet.

They come in a Rose tint which suits me. They enable me to see fish as well if not better than any other brand I have ever worn.

Finally, and importantly, they look sensational.

My guess is that in the not too distant future these glasses will easily earn a place in the fly fishing market. Seek them out and try them before you buy your next pair.

It is a pity that they are not an Australian brand.
