From "Blokes and Tackle" - Steve Starling.:
Bagging out at Arthurs Peter Hayes is one of Tasmania's finest trout guides, and a world class competition caster. Fishing with him was something I'd long wanted to do, and in 1999 I got the chance; at Arthurs Lake, in Tassie's central highlands. That day turned out to be one of the most enjoyable I've spent on the water with a fly rod in hand. Despite or perhaps because of- the overcast, breezy conditions, large Highland Dun mayflies hatched sporadically through the middle part of the day, while a modest gum beetle fall in the late afternoon added to the ample supply of trout tucker floating on Arthurs' cool, choppy surface. We managed to pick rising fish off with some regularity, and I'm chuffed to say that I caught (and mostly released) my first ever Tasmanian bag limit of 12 fish for the day. I think Peter was as delighted with that result as I was, and also somewhat relieved when I was finally able to slow my saltwater tuned striking reflexes down enough to nail the last fish of my 'bag', just minutes before darkness settled! Between pointing me at trout and offering valuable casting tips, Peter also enjoyed the chance to fish a little himself something he never does while guiding clients. Between us, we landed in excess of 20 beautiful fish. All were 'wild' browns (there are no rainbows in Arthurs) and the majority weighted between 0.8 and 1.4 kilos apiece. Pound for pound, they were the hardest fighting and fittest trout I've ever encountered. But the real eye opener that day for me was Haysie a highly-skilled, professional young man who is definitely destined to go places in the world of fishing. Hodder Publishing ISBN 0 73360991 0 |
